Infographic: CompTIA PenTest+ vs. CEH

by CompTIA | Jan 15, 2019

We are often asked, "How does CompTIA PenTest+ compare to EC-Council’s Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification?" Both exams assess penetration testing skills, but the similarities stop there. To help you choose which exam to take, we’ve identified four advantages of CompTIA PenTest+ over CEH.

  1. Employability
  2. Assessment of Hands-On Skills
  3. Price
  4. Soft Skills

The only reason to get the CEH is because the DOD 8570 requirement. I hope the PenTest+ will be added to the DOD 8570 baseline certifications. I recently passed the CEH v10. It was very costly and I think the CompTia Security+ does a better job of teaching many of the same concepts. I look forward to taking the PenTest+ certification after I pass my Security+.

Hi, Marc! Thanks for your comment. We have submitted PenTest+ for DoD approval and expect to hear back this spring. Stay tuned!

I recently passed Security+, I also have a goal to earn PenTest+ in this year. I think yes PenTest is better than CEH since it covers PBQs. But because CEH has been around for many years, alot people know it and have been used to hear that word (CEH). I think more effort is needed to make people understand and get familiar with PenTest+. Also there are not enough materials to help people study and pass PenTest+ cos it is a new exam. I think when alot people will get familiar with PenTest+ with alot materials ( books , forums) , they will go for PenTest+ instead of CEH.

i currently studying for SSCP but i find it too administrative than technical or hands on. Since i to become i certified PenTest+, would i need to pass first Security +, before doing this PenTest+ cert from comptia ? My long term goal is to get CISSP cert, after gaining industrial experience on my belt.

Hi, Allen! Thanks for your question. CompTIA certifications do not have strict prerequisites, though we do recommend you have a certain level of expertise in order to best set yourself up for certification success. For PenTest+, we recommend having the equivalent knowledge of Network+ and Security+ or a minimum of 3-4 years of hands-on information security or related experience. To see if you're ready to get PenTest+ certified, download the exam objectives and see how much you already know and how much you need to work on: Good luck!

Great infographic... I would definitely go for Pentest+ once is has been DoD approved. I also find that there are not many resources like Training videos etc on Pentest+... I have a few months to decide...

Is there any update on when/where the Pentest+ will fit within the DoD baseline Certification requirements.

  • Thursday, February 28, 2019

Hi, Anthony! There is a backlog due to the government shutdown, but it is in process and we expect to have approval this spring.

Is there an update on when Pentest + will meet the requirements for 8570?

  • Monday, May 6, 2019

Hi, John! DoD is still backed up due to the shutdown earlier this year. We expect to get approval this summer.
