10 Things to Watch for from CompTIA in 2017

by Debra B. McCraw | Jan 11, 2017

A sign on a desk that says '2017 Plan'Just as you’ve made your New Year’s resolutions and set goals for 2017, so has CompTIA. We have some great things planned in the coming year, so get excited. Here’s a snapshot of what you can look forward to seeing from us over the next 12 months.

1. New Certification

You’ve probably heard by now that CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CSA+) certification launches on February 15. This exam completes the cybersecurity career pathway by bridging the gap between CompTIA Security+ and CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP). Earning these three certifications will give you the skills equivalent to 10 years of work experience in cybersecurity.

2. Updated Certification

We constantly review the material covered by our exams with help from CompTIA Subject Matter Experts, who share their industry expertise to make sure our certifications apply to real-world IT jobs. We’ve completed that process for CompTIA Project+ and will be releasing a new exam in March.

3. Retiring Certifications

This year, we’ll be saying farewell to CompTIA Healthcare IT Tech in February and CompTIA Mobility+ in December. Much of the content covered by CompTIA Mobility+ is also covered by CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+. Retired certifications automatically receive good-for-life status.

4. Subject Matter Expert (SME) Workshops

Sign up to receive a discount on CertMaster or an exam voucher CompTIA is always looking for new, qualified SMEs to help with exam development. We have upcoming workshops for our CompTIA Network+, Security+, A+, CASP, Cloud+ and CSA+ exams. If you hold one of these certifications, consider applying to be a SME and attending one of our upcoming workshops. If you’re selected, in exchange for your participation, you’ll receive a $400-a-day stipend ($500 for international), complimentary CompTIA exam voucher, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and recognition on our website, not to mention delicious meals and snacks while you’re here.

5. CompTIA Online Testing

Starting this year, IT pros in the United States will be able to take some CompTIA certification exams online instead of at a testing facility. We’ve teamed up with ProctorU to replicate the in-person experience as much as possible while offering the convenience of testing from anywhere with an internet connection. Stay tuned for more details!

6. IT Industry Outlook 2017

In late January, CompTIA will release its annual IT Industry Outlook, which offers insights on emerging, continuous and unexpected trends that will shape the tech landscape in the year ahead. Take a peek at the 2017 Industry Outlook Preview to get a jump on trends to come.

7. IT Pro Association

This spring, CompTIA will offer a new membership opportunity, CompTIA AITP, to help IT professionals achieve success throughout their career. Benefits include career services, continuing education, training and skills development, networking and more. Learn more here and sign up to get an exclusive early-bird discount.

8. CompTIA Advocacy

CompTIA Advocacy’s 2017 U.S. federal policy priorities focus on spurring innovation and the economy, enhancing cybersecurity, supporting the 21st Century workforce and increasing access to broadband communication. In February, CompTIA members will convene in Washington, D.C., for the D.C. Fly-In, where they’ll learn about key issues during the Tech Policy Summit and connect with their state’s representatives. Learn more about CompTIA advocacy and our state and international priorities here.

9. CompTIA Events

Throughout the year, we host a number of events to help you connect with other IT pros and stay on top of industry trends. Some of our biggest events include our Annual Member Meeting in Chicago this March; ChannelCon, immediately followed by our Partner Summit, in Austin this summer; and EMEACon this fall. We hope to see you there!

10. CompTIA at Industry Events

We’re excited to be heading back to Austin two more times for key IT industry events. We’ll be at SpiceWorld in October, and we’re very excited about our upcoming panel – Apprenticeships and Solving the IT Skills Gap – at the 2017 SXSW Conference. If you’re there, too, be sure to say hello!

  • Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Hi Bangaly! Thanks for your comment. We do not have plans to update the CompTIA Network+ exam this year, so it will not change before March. Good luck!

Hi, I just want to start my professional training on Comptia and also obtain certification. I want to know which package is best to start with as a beginner. Regards

  • Wednesday, January 18, 2017

Hi Agbabiaka! Thanks for your question. Check out this page to learn more about the certifications we offer, recommended experience and related job roles. If you need more help deciding, there's also a quiz. For someone with little previous IT experience and knowledge, CompTIA IT Fundamentals and CompTIA A+ are both great options. Good luck! https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/which-certification

Hi I'm curious to know if there is a tentative date for the online certification testing, which certifications will be included and if there would be a change in pricing for the certifications that are included.

  • Thursday, January 19, 2017

Hi Devon! We will be rolling out online testing in early 2017, so very soon! The price will be the same for online and on-site testing, but you’ll need to decide which way you want to take the exam before purchasing your voucher. As for which exams, Project+ will be first, but we’ll add more over time. Hope this helps!

Hi, I am curious to know if you will be adding a new course for Healthcare IT Technician since the current one is being sunsetted by the end of Feb 2017. I have just discovered your site and listing of exams and this would have been a nice addition to my resume and skill sets. Will there be an alternative to this course after Feb 2017? Thanks

  • Thursday, January 19, 2017

Hi Mike! Thanks for your question. At this time, we do not have plans to replace the retiring Healthcare IT Technician certification. That said, you may still buy and take the exam until it retires at the end of February, and your certification would be considered good for life. You can read more here: https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/healthcare-it-technician

When will the SY0-401 Security+ exam be retiring? It's my understanding the exams typically retire 3yrs after their inception. If this trend is followed, the current Security+ exam (SY0-401) would retire in May, which means it may be best to take SY0-501.

  • Friday, January 20, 2017

Hi Ty! Thanks for your question. We use the term "retirement" for an exam that we will not be updating, such as Mobility+ and Healthcare IT Technician. Because of the high demand for cybersecurity professionals, we have no plans to retire Security+ anytime soon. In fact, we are expanding our security offerings with the addition of CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst next month. We do, however, update our exams on a regular basis to make sure the content reflects what's happening in the industry. As for the Security+ update, we do not have a release date yet, but rest assured that whenever you decide to take the exam, it will be good for three years. Completing continuing education activities during that three-year period can help you stay abreast of current events related to security. You can even choose to take the latest version of the exam as a way to renew your certification. Read more about continuing education here: https://certification.comptia.org/continuing-education/how-to-renew Good luck!

Hello, My school is a comptia partner. Can you list the partner prices for exams for 2017?

  • Friday, January 20, 2017

Hi Ian! Thanks for your question. Your school has pricing information for the exams it offers. I would recommend asking your teacher/professor. Good luck!

Hi, I'm in Jamaica and i can't find a Comptia partner that offers the exams, can the Network + or A + be taken online and is there a date for the exam?

  • Monday, January 23, 2017

Hi Shakeane! Thanks for your question. Because both A+ and Network+ include performance-based questions, it's a bit more difficult to translate those exams to online, so we don't have a schedule yet for when those will be available online. You can read more about that here: https://certification.comptia.org/testing/about-testing/performance-based-questions-explained Good luck!

    Thursday, January 26, 2017

Hi! My name is Tammy from Toronto. I am currently studying the ComPTIA A+ 901&902. I read that this is going to be good for life? I wonder what does that mean? Would ComPTIA A+ Certification is still valid? I am planning the exam this April the 901 followed by the 902. Do you think this is still worth it? Am I still be able to land a job?

  • Thursday, January 26, 2017

Hi, Tammy! Thanks for your question. Good for Life status only applies to certifications earned prior to 2011 or certifications that have been retired. CompTIA A+ certification is a solid foundation for your IT career and valued by many employers, so rest assured that your certification is worthwhile. And 901 and 902 are the most current versions, so you are on the right track. After you receive your certification, it's good for three years, and you can renew by completing Continuing Education activities. Read more about that in the Continuing Education section of our website: https://certification.comptia.org/continuing-education/how-to-renew Good luck on your exam!

How offen is the comptia Linux + updated is it every 3 month like the other comptia Exams a+, network+ security+. Also what is the difference between Linux + and LPIC

  • Monday, April 3, 2017

Hi Jacquez! Thanks for your comment. CompTIA offers Linux+ in partnership with LPI, the publishers of LPIC-1. LPI manages the updates to the exams, which happen about once every five years, so Linux+ is not on the same three-year refresh cycle as other CompTIA certifications. Those who earn Linux+ may also be eligible for LPIC-1, but if you want both, you should start with Linux+. You can read more here: https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/linux. Good luck!

  • Monday, May 22, 2017

Hi, Wilfried! Congratulations on deciding to get A+ certified! I would recommend checking out some of the training options available on the CompTIA A+ page: https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/a As for when to take the exam, you can go to this page to find a Pearson VUE Authorized Testing Center near you: https://wsr.pearsonvue.com/testtaker/registration/SelectTestCenterProximity/COMPTIA/224052 You can go here to buy your exam voucher and register: https://www.comptiastore.com/?ProductCode=comptiaa&utm_source=CertificationWebsite&utm_campaign=BuyNowButtons&utm_medium=Website&utm_term=APlusButton&mkto=aWRfbWt0bz0xMTItSElMLTQ5MiZ0b2tlbl9ta3RvPV9tY2gtY29tcHRpYS5vcmctMTQ5NDg3OTU0Njk3NC0yODU4OQ Good luck!

    Monday, May 29, 2017

Hi. I'm currently enrolled in a CompTIA A+ program. It's a 6 month program. I've read many reviews about this certification. I know it's a great starting point for people who are new to the IT field but, what are the chances that I can find a job that can support me and my family until I get a higher certification? Also, I'm a big sports person, are there any occupations that can connect the IT field along with my love for sports?

  • Tuesday, May 30, 2017

Hi, Antwonne! Congratulations on working toward your A+ certification! That's a great start to a career in IT. After earning your A+, you may be qualified for jobs like IT support specialist and IT support admin, which make a median of $50,000-$75,000 per year in the United States. As for sports jobs, IT definitely has a presence! Check out this article that features three IT pros who work in sports: https://certification.comptia.org/it-career-news/post/view/2013/11/19/going-for-gold-a-comptia-guide-to-a-career-in-it-in-sport

Does anyone know when CompTia will release a new version of the CASP? Comptia normally does every 3 years they update. When was the CASP released?

  • Friday, July 14, 2017

Hi, Michael! The new version of CASP is slated for the first quarter of 2018, but we don't have an exact date yet. Stay tuned!

  • Dave

    Saturday, July 15, 2017

Hello, I my company wants me to do CompTIA A+ 901 & 902 / CompTIA Network+ N10-006 / CompTIA Security+ SY0-401. I know the A+ 901 & 902 are new exams, but my question to you is this, when will the new Network+ and the Security+ be released? I do not want to spend a lot of money on course material that will be out of date soon or waste time studying for exams that have been replaced with new ones. With my work at my job I estimate 8 to 10 months per course. I know this may sound like a long time, but I work between 50 & 70 hours a week with all the traveling I do for my work. And when I do take an exam I want to succeed the first time. For myself, I would like to further my education with Computer Forensics. Is CompTIA going to offer anything in that direction in the future? Thank you for your help on this issue.

  • Monday, July 17, 2017

Hi, Dave! Thanks for your question. Preparing for and taking CompTIA exams while working full time is a difficult task, but know that it's not uncommon. A lot of people are in your same boat. Taking your time to make sure you understand the information and can successfully pass the exam is a great approach! You should find, too, that the certifications build off of each other, so it won't all be brand new information. To answer your question, the new Security+ is slated for release at the end of 2017, and the new Network+ in the beginning of 2018. Cybersecurity is a large focus for us right now, and the next exam we are working on is CompTIA Penetration Tester, also slated for a 2018 release. Good luck!

Hi, i have registered comptia A+ exam, want to know does it come out with study book or i should buy my own study book. if i should buy which book will you recommend for me thank you.

  • Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Hi, Richard! Thanks for your questions. When you register for your CompTIA exam, you are simply registering to take the exam. In terms of studying and preparation, you have a lot of options, including books, online classes, in-person classes and more. Check out this blog post to find the resources that would work best for you: https://certification.comptia.org/it-career-news/post/view/2016/10/06/7-ways-to-prep-for-a-comptia-exam Good luck!

Hi, I have obtained CompTia A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications. I am a technical trainer at the company I work for and have developed a Network+ course that I teach to company employees to help prepare them for the Network+ exam (my course follows the Network+ Cert Guide authored by Keith Barker and Kevin Wallace, and each participant is required to purchase the cert guide). I've delivered this course to 76 individuals to date (27 hours + quizzes), and I'm wondering if I can get CE credits as I continue to teach and help prepare people for the CompTIA Network+ exam? Thanks - looking forward to your response.

  • Monday, August 7, 2017

Hi, Mike! Thanks for your comment. You CAN earn CEUs for teaching a course! This page outlines the details about what qualifies and how to get credit: https://certification.comptia.org/continuing-education/choose/renewing-with-multiple-activities/it-industry-participation Good luck!

Hi, I would like to know if the Comptia a+ 902 exams has undergone any changes since this year started or is it still the same? I would also like to know where I can get as much 902 exam questions to practice with as well as exam simulations so I can be fully prepared before taking this exam, I would loke to get as much insight as possible.

  • Tuesday, August 29, 2017

Hi, Satyanand! CompTIA A+ has not been updated this year, so the study materials for 220-902 are still current. If you go to the CompTIA A+ page, you can download the exam objectives and sample questions (click on Exam Details), and you can also find a variety of training options (click on Preparation) - books, classes, online training and more: https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/a Good luck!

    Tuesday, August 29, 2017

Hello- I'm very interested in taking the CompTIA a+. I looked at your url links for recommended training books. Many of the books show that they cover the "2015" CompTIA a+. So, is the 2015 the latest version of the exam? I want to make sure I'm purchasing the most recent books that would cover whatever the most recent version of the CompTIA a+ exam is? Thank you.

  • Tuesday, August 29, 2017

Hi, Lori! Yes, CompTIA A+ was last updated in December 2015. We update our exams every three years, so there should be an update in late 2018, but we have not set a date yet.

If I study and get the certification for A+ within a year, and the exam is due to change in the fall of 2018, will I need to retake the exam?

  • Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Hi, Josh! Thanks for your comment. When we release a new version of an exam, we still keep the old one active for up to six months. During that period, candidates can choose to take either version. So, if you are studying for CompTIA A+ 901/902 now, you'll have plenty of time. Once you pass the exam, your certification is good for three years, regardless of which version you took. Good luck!

Planning to take the Security+ classes and exam this month. When will the CompTIA Online Testing be available in the US? Where can I get the schedule for the online testing? Thank you.

  • Friday, September 8, 2017

Hi, Jan! We’re currently performing system upgrades, but we hope to have online testing back up in a few weeks. Security+ was not previously offered as an online exam, so you'll want to check the website to see if online testing is an option for you. Once we have online testing back up and running, we'll post more details on our website: https://certification.comptia.org/testing. Good luck!

Hi I am planning to to retake the exam N10-006 in two weeks and would like to know if you are planning to change the exam or its it still gonna be the same by the end of september

  • Monday, September 11, 2017

Hi, Larry! Thanks for your comment. We update our exams on a three-year cycle, and CompTIA A+ was updated in December 2015, so the new version will likely be released in late 2018. As for study tips, go to the CompTIA A+ page and download the exam objectives and sample questions to get an idea of what's included on the exam: https://certification.comptia.org/certifications/a. Going through these will help you focus your studies on the topics that you need to work on the most. On the same page, click on Preparation to find a wide variety of books, training resources and classes related to A+. Good luck!

  • Monday, September 11, 2017

Hi, Veronicca! N10-006 launched in February 2015, so the next update won't be until early 2018. Good luck!

Hello! I just purchased the Certmaster Bundle Package for the SYO-401 Exam. I'm currently overseas and plan on taking it as soon as I get back stateside....which should be before the end of the year. Will I still be able to choose to take the SYO-401 certification exam? Or do I have to take the SYO-501?

  • Friday, October 20, 2017

Hi, Jordan! Don't worry - you will still be able to take SY0-401 for six months after the release of the updated version. Good luck!
