Currently Seeking Subject Matter Experts for CompTIA A+ Item Development

CompTIA is currently seeking Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to provide assistance in the CompTIA A+ Item Development Workshop. This step is part of an ongoing development process that is necessary to ensure the validity of the exam. Assistance from SME’s is crucial to the relevance and quality of the program.

It is the on-the-job experience of SMEs that provides the exam with the precise skills standards required to perform the job of an A+ professional. SME participation provides validity to the items with the certification used by employers, consumers, IT and vertical industries, making it a widely-recognized and valued benchmark for candidates.

Important note: For this workshop we will be focusing only on CompTIA A+ Essentials 220-601 (entry-level IT knowledge) and CompTIA A+ 220-602 (individuals who work in a mobile or corporate technical environment that have a high level of face-to-face client contact).

Although CompTIA appreciates interest from the training community, applications from trainers, authors, or individuals that can profit from or materially benefit from knowledge of the CompTIA A+ program content are not eligible to participate as SMEs. All subject matter experts must provide a signed copy of the CompTIA SME non-disclosure agreement.

SMEs will be asked to:

  • Attend a five-day workshop at CompTIA headquarters in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois February 19-23, 2007. For those SMEs traveling from outside the local area, Oakbrook Terrace is a western suburb of Chicago and is accessible from both O'Hare and Midway airports.
  • Participate with SME peers and CompTIA staff in writing and reviewing items associated with computer technologies, knowledge sets and best practices for the ideal CompTIA A+ certified professional. SMEs need to be able to work independently and in small groups. SMEs need to have strong writing skills and should be able to articulate thoughts in writing and in a verbal setting.
  • Sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Review the document and make sure you have a thorough understanding of the terms before submitting an application. A signed SME NDA is required for all participating SMEs.

SMEs will be provided with:

  • All information and materials required to complete the workshop. SMEs may bring additional printed reference material.
  • Continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages during meeting days.
  • Recognition for you and your organization (if provided) on the CompTIA A+ pages of the Web site (pending adequate level of participation).
  • A SME stipend of $300 a day (pending adequate level of participation).
  • One CompTIA exam voucher.

SME Requirements:

  • Must at least have four years experience working in the field of PC technologies (i.e. IT Tech, PC Tech, PC Support Specialist etc.).
  • Strong communication and written English skills (grammar/spelling).
  • Ability to commit to a five-day (eight hours per day) workshop.
  • Agree to sign a non-disclosure agreement enforced for a period of three years. Please review the document and make sure you have a thorough understanding of the terms within, prior to submitting an application. (The content within the SME NDA is subject to change without notice).
  • Must submit a current resume that outlines all A+ experience pertaining to the current CompTIA A+ objectives.
